Hexham Abbey. Our local parish church. Sacked by Willam Wallace in 1297, during the Scottish wars of independence. Dedicated to St Andrew – a Scottish Saint – Wallace told his men not to destroy the alter. Wallace supposedly went to check his weapons at the door so he could pray at the alter. When he returned a bunch of Galwegions had ransacked the alter. The west coast Galwegions reviered St Columba, not St Andrew.
