Steel Rigg on Hadrian’s Wall. It is easy to see George R. Martin’s inspiration for his Ice Wall in Game of Thrones, when looking at this view. Apparently he wasn’t great with measurements, so when the production team suggested the Ice Wall was a thousand feet high, he thought that sounded about right. When presented with the mock up in the show he was surprised by its size. Steel Rigg is a formidable barrier in the landscape, tested now and then by brave rock climbers. 2000 years ago with a wall on top and soldiers with sharp weapons it must have looked impenetrable.
