Happy Winter solstice!
The winter solstice was one of the most important days of the year to our Stone Age ancestors.  It marks the shortest day and the longest night.  Though due to a quirk of how the earth orbits the sun the morning still grows darker while the evening grows lighter.  It is not until around the 25th of December that the morning and evening both get lighter.  This is why the 25th of December has been an important date for thousands of years. So, when you are tucking into your Christmas pud, you can thank our Stone Age ancestors for watching the sky so attentively.
